Liverpool manager Arne Slot says his team carries a “big responsibility” as they aim to clinch the club’s historic 20th top-flight title with just a single point against Tottenham at Anfield on Sunday.
Following Arsenal’s midweek draw with Crystal Palace, the equation is simple: one more point, and Liverpool will be crowned Premier League champions — with four games to spare.
Slot knows just how much this moment means, especially after Liverpool’s last title win in 2019-20, which came under Jurgen Klopp during the Covid-hit season. That year, the Reds lifted the trophy in an empty Anfield, celebrating their first league title in 30 years without fans in the stands.
“First of all, it’s a big responsibility,” Slot said. “We’re aware that the last time this club won the league, it was during Covid, so everyone is really looking forward to Sunday. But we know there’s still a job to do — and that’s getting at least one point.”
Slot also called on the Anfield crowd to rise to the occasion.
“Hopefully our fans support us in the best possible way, like they have all season. They know we still need something from this game, and their energy will be massive for us,” he added. “It’s a great occasion to look forward to — but it comes with responsibility.”
The odds are stacked in Liverpool’s favor. Spurs haven’t won at Anfield since 2011 and arrive with 18 league losses this season. Their focus is also split, with a Europa League semi-final first leg against Bodo/Glimt looming on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Liverpool boast the Premier League’s best home record, taking 41 points from 16 games at Anfield. They’ve lost just twice all season — and only once on home turf.
Sunday could mark a new chapter in the club’s storied history. All they need is one point. But Slot and his team know — nothing is guaranteed until it’s done.
