TCN Dismisses Reports of 2025 Grid Collapse as “Mischievous and Misleading”

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has refuted claims that the national grid has collapsed twice since the beginning of the year.

On Wednesday, February 12, power outages were reported in some parts of the country following a disturbance in the national grid, sparking speculation of yet another collapse.

However, in a statement shared on its official X handle on Saturday, February 15, TCN dismissed these reports as “mischievous and misleading.”

“It is pertinent to note that the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) is regulated by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and governed by industry documents. These documents reserve for the National Control Centre System Operator or its designated backup, the National Supplementary Control Centre (SNCC), the exclusive right to provide information to the public about grid events and status,” the statement read in part.

TCN clarified that while no system collapse occurred, a tripping incident on February 12, 2025, temporarily disrupted power supply in Abuja, Lagos, and Osogbo.

The company explained that the Omotosho-Ikeja West 330 kilovolt (kV) transmission line tripped, while the Benin-Egbin 330kV line was undergoing scheduled maintenance. This caused a cascade effect, leading to localized outages, though other parts of the country remained unaffected.

TCN confirmed that full bulk power supply to the affected areas has since been restored.
