Denmark Witnesses Historic Shift as Queen Margrethe Abdicates in Favor of Son, King Frederik X

A significant moment in Danish history unfolds on Sunday as Queen Margrethe steps down, paving the way for her 55-year-old son, King Frederik X, to ascend the throne. Anticipation is high, with over 100,000 Danes expected to gather for this unprecedented event.

The beloved Queen Margrethe II, 83, known for her chain-smoking habits, will leave Copenhagen’s Amalienborg Palace around 1:30 pm (1230 GMT) for a brief carriage ride to Christiansborg Palace, the seat of government and parliament.

At 2:00 pm, during a Council of State, she will formally sign a declaration of abdication, concluding her remarkable 52-year reign. This marks only the second time in Danish history that a sovereign has voluntarily stepped down, the last instance being Erik III nearly nine centuries ago in 1146.

King Frederik X, accompanied by his Australian-born wife Mary and their eldest child, 18-year-old Prince Christian, will be present at the Council of State. Following Queen Margrethe’s abdication, he automatically assumes the role of king and head of state.

The proclamation of King Frederik X will take place on the balcony of Christiansborg Palace, with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen officiating. Historian Lars Hovbakke Sorensen humorously notes the balcony’s singular purpose for such occasions, expecting a turnout exceeding the 10,000 who gathered in 1972 during Queen Margrethe’s ascent.

Security measures are in place, with police anticipating a crowd of more than 100,000 in the capital streets. Hotel bookings and travel arrangements have seen a surge since the queen’s unexpected abdication announcement during her New Year’s Eve address.

Copenhagen resident Aske Julius expresses the sentiment shared by many Danes, acknowledging Queen Margrethe as the embodiment of Denmark, the “soul of the nation.”

Apart from the abdication, the succession protocol aligns with previous royal transitions in Denmark. Notably, there are no foreign dignitaries or royals invited, and no coronation or throne for the new monarch.

Queen Margrethe’s decision to abdicate on the exact 52nd anniversary of her assumption of the throne adds symbolic weight to the day. The surprising announcement, attributed to health concerns after a significant back surgery last year, was revealed to her family only three days prior.

Despite initial shock, polls indicate strong support from more than 80 percent of Danes for her decision. Queen Margrethe will retain her title and may represent the royal family on occasion.

Historians believe that the transition to King Frederik X at this juncture allows him time to grow into his role gradually, avoiding a scenario like Prince Charles becoming King Charles at an advanced age. While both mother and son enjoy widespread support, experts anticipate a distinct and more informal approach from King Frederik X as he brings his own style to the Danish monarchy.
