The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has unveiled a strategic plan to relocate specific departments from Abuja to Lagos.

According to information obtained by Punch, resistance to the transfer emerged among some bank staff, who suggested that it was influenced by tribal considerations. However, the decision was reportedly driven by the goal of ensuring staff safety and enhancing overall productivity.

A memo obtained by Punch outlined the rationale behind the initiative, stating, “This is to notify all staff members at the CBN Head Office that we have initiated a decongestion action plan designed to optimize the operational environment of the Bank.”

The memo further explained that the plan aimed to align the bank’s structure with its functions and objectives, redistribute skills for a more balanced geographical spread of talent, and comply with building regulations. The move is prompted by repeated warnings from the Facility Manager and the findings of the Committee on Decongestion of the CBN Head Office.

Specifically, the action plan focuses on optimizing the utilization of other CBN premises, with 1,533 staff slated to be relocated to various CBN facilities within Abuja, Lagos, and understaffed branches. The current occupancy level of 4,233 at the Head Office significantly exceeds the optimal capacity of 2,700, leading to various operational challenges.

The source indicated that the CBN’s directive is for staff to fully relocate to the designated state instead of commuting between different states, emphasizing safety and increased productivity. The departments set for relocation, as outlined by CBN Governor Yemi Cardoso, include Banking Supervision, Other Financial Institutions Supervision, Consumer Protection, Payment System Management, and Financial Policy Regulations.
