The Acting Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Chris Maiyaki, disclosed that the commission has identified at least 37 illegal universities operating in Nigeria. Maiyaki made this clarification during an interview with Channels Television in Abuja on Wednesday, highlighting that the Department of State Services has been actively involved in cracking down on these unauthorized institutions.

He emphasized the importance of parents checking the NUC’s website to verify the legitimacy of universities in Nigeria, cautioning them against enrolling their wards in illegal institutions. Maiyaki also noted that arrests have been made in connection with these illegal universities.

The revelation comes in the wake of the suspension of degree certificates from two francophone West African countries. An undercover journalist exposed how he obtained a degree from a university in Benin Republic in under two months, subsequently deploying for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
