Royal Antwerp midfielder, Alhassan Yusuf, is set to replace the injured Leicester City’s Wilfred Ndidi as the Super Eagles gear up for the Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire.
Ndidi was absent from Leicester City’s 4-1 victory over Huddersfield Town on Monday, citing an unspecified injury. Team spokesman Babafemi Raji announced on Wednesday that 23-year-old Yusuf, in good form with the Belgian champions, would take Ndidi’s place.
Yusuf, although yet to be capped by Nigeria, was named in the 40-man provisional squad for the Cup of Nations.
Kelechi Iheanacho, Ndidi’s Leicester City teammate, expressed his hope to recover from a muscle injury in time for the competition, scheduled to kick off on January 13 in Abidjan and hosted by Ivory Coast.
The Super Eagles, three-time African champions, are currently training in the United Arab Emirates and have been drawn in Group A alongside Ivory Coast, Guinea Bissau, and Equatorial Guinea. Their opening match is against Equatorial Guinea on January 14.
