A woman named Oluchukwu Nwosu has been arrested on allegations of selling her three-month-old grandchild for N50,000 in Anambra State. The news was shared by Chidinma Ikeanyionwu, the media aide to the state Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, in a press statement on Sunday, October 22, 2023. The baby was rescued following a report by his mother, Ijeoma Nwosu, who claimed that her mother forcefully sold her child shortly after birth and refused to disclose the baby’s whereabouts.

In response to Ijeoma’s report, Commissioner Ify Obinabo took swift action to identify and apprehend the individuals involved in the illegal adoption. After nearly a month of consistent intelligence surveillance by the State Ministry of Women and Social Welfare in Awka, the culprits were apprehended.

Hon. Ify Obinabo expressed her concern about the persistence of illegal adoption despite the government’s efforts to combat it. She issued a warning that anyone engaged in such unlawful activities would face legal consequences.

The press statement revealed that this was the third time Ijeoma had conceived outside of marriage, and Oluchukwu Nwosu, her mother, had reportedly sold the three-month-old baby for N50,000. Oluchukwu Nwosu cited financial difficulties and the inability to care for the child as reasons for her actions.

The statement also mentioned the involvement of other individuals in the transaction, including Tochukwu Asiegbu, who acted as an intermediary, and Evelyn Egwuatu, who paid N200,000 for the child. It was noted that the baby’s health suffered due to improper feeding with soya bean powder.

All those involved in the incident have been apprehended and handed over to the police for further investigation as of the time of this report.
