Manchester United and England defender Harry Maguire voices his support for Jordan Henderson amidst the controversy surrounding the booing of the latter by England fans during the international friendly against Australia at Wembley.

Henderson has faced criticism following his move from Liverpool, where he served as captain, to the Saudi Pro League, signing a reported £700,000 per week deal with Steven Gerrard’s Al-Ettifaq in July.

Maguire, who has himself experienced jeers from Manchester United and England supporters, believes that those who have criticized Henderson do not truly represent the spirit of England fans.

In an interview with Sky Sports on October 18, Maguire stated, “Genuine England fans don’t boo players. They don’t boo players who have dedicated their lives to playing the game and have given their all to create memorable moments for their country, fans, and families. I know many dedicated England fans, and those who have supported me since my debut are firmly behind me and Jordan. We heard more cheers than jeers, but those who jeer are not true England fans.”

Henderson’s transfer to Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia has attracted significant attention, especially given his prior public support for the LGBT community. The Middle Eastern country has strict laws against homosexuality. The 33-year-old midfielder faced extensive boos during England’s 1-0 win over Australia in the international friendly, and similar incidents occurred during England’s 3-1 victory over Italy, securing their spot in Euro 2024.

Despite the backlash and criticism, Henderson remains committed to representing England and leading the team. He shared his perspective, saying, “It’s not pleasant when your own fans are booing, but people are entitled to their opinions. However, it won’t alter my dedication to this team and my country. I give my all every time I step on the pitch. I still want to play for England as long as I can and continue giving my all for the team and my country.”
