A woman identified as Hope Nwala has allegedly scalded her husband, Ekelediri Nwankwo, with hot groundnut oil in the Okehi community, situated in the Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State.
It has been reported that the couple had been experiencing ongoing conflicts related to the behavior and attire of the wife’s younger sister, who resided with them.
Hope, originally from the Obite Community in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of the state, fled from Okehi after purportedly committing this heinous act.
In an interview with the media on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, the victim explained that his sister-in-law had been showing disrespect towards him and dressing provocatively. As a result, he had decided to ask her to leave their home.
Nwankwo disclosed that he had given her money to return to her own residence. However, his wife opposed his decision, leading to a heated argument between the couple.
He further revealed that during the period his sister-in-law was residing with them, his wife began exhibiting suspicious behavior. He began noticing an unfamiliar man frequenting their house in the presence of his wife and sister-in-law.
Nwankwo explained that he gathered the courage to confront his wife regarding his observations and demanded to know the identity of the unknown man. Instead of providing answers, his wife resorted to violence, pouring hot oil on him while he was asleep and even striking him with a hammer.
“I asked my wife’s younger sister to leave my house due to her inappropriate dressing and behavior,” he recounted. “Her conduct and her occupying my matrimonial bed even when I was present were unacceptable. No reasonable man would tolerate such behavior. But my wife opposed her sister’s departure from our home.”
He also mentioned witnessing his wife alone with a tall, unknown man in a shop he had rented for her. This man wasn’t there for any business purposes but seemed to be following both his wife and her sister around.
“As a response to these concerns, I provided her younger sister with two thousand naira for transportation back home, intending to understand what was happening in my household. However, my wife became furious. As I went to bed to sleep, she poured boiling groundnut oil on me and proceeded to assault me with a hammer.”
SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the spokesperson for the state Police Command, confirmed the incident, stating that an ongoing investigation is in progress, and efforts are being made to apprehend the suspect who is currently on the run.
“I can confirm the incident. The matter was reported at the Igwuruta Police State Station. The woman has fled, but we are actively pursuing her arrest to ensure she faces the consequences of her actions,” the PPRO added.
