Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, announced the commutation of death sentences for four prisoners to life imprisonment and granted pardons to 17 others incarcerated in various correctional centers across the state.
The Governor made this announcement during a statewide broadcast on Sunday, coinciding with this year’s Independence Day celebration.
In his address, Governor Kefas appealed to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to consider suspending their proposed nationwide strike action. He urged both organizations to engage in constructive dialogue to resolve outstanding issues in the interest of the masses and the nation.
Governor Kefas emphasized his unwavering commitment to advancing various sectors of the state’s economy, including agriculture, healthcare, education, and security. He called for increased collaboration among residents to help achieve the administration’s established goals.
“Allow me to underscore our steadfast commitment to education. Every child in Taraba deserves the opportunity to learn and thrive,” he declared.
“I promise to prioritize education by instituting free and mandatory primary and secondary education.
“Education is the cornerstone of unlocking our potential and ensuring a brighter future for Taraba State. Our agricultural sector is brimming with promise, and we are poised to initiate an agricultural revolution through mechanization, thereby bolstering productivity, generating employment, and fortifying food security.
“Together, we shall transform Taraba into an agricultural powerhouse. Healthcare is an essential right, and we are dedicated to furnishing top-notch healthcare equipment and services, with a steadfast focus on the welfare of our healthcare professionals, as a healthy Taraba is a prosperous Taraba.
“Our commitment to infrastructural development remains unwavering. We are committed to investing in pivotal projects like the expansion of the Jalingo airport and the enhancement of our road network.
“These infrastructure improvements will connect our state, promote commerce, and enhance the lives of our residents. Economic development isn’t a mere aspiration; it’s a necessity. We will empower our youth, support our women, and uplift our citizens with special needs.
“Taraba will evolve into a thriving economic hub, drawing investments and tourists from across the globe. We are poised to open our doors to the world. In the realm of security, it is of utmost importance, and we take it seriously by collaborating closely with security agencies to ensure the safety of our people. There will be no sanctuary for criminals, kidnappers, or human traffickers in Taraba.
“Our state will be secure, and our communities protected because good governance and transparency are our guiding principles.
“We will reform our civil service and local government administration to better serve you, ensuring that development reaches every corner of our state while upholding the rule of law.”
