As Nigerians celebrate the 63rd Independence anniversary today, Organised Labour issued a call yesterday for all citizens, regardless of their ethnic, religious, or political affiliations, to unite and participate in the nationwide strike scheduled to commence on October 3rd. This strike is seen as a collective stride towards achieving freedom, improving living conditions, and fostering prosperity for all.
Through the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Organised Labour implored royal leaders and fellow well-meaning Nigerians to counsel the government to heed the pleas of labor and alleviate the suffering of the people across the nation.
“This nation has the potential to benefit us all, and it can be transformed into something beautiful. However, positive change doesn’t happen by chance; it requires concerted effort. Liberty is not a fruit that falls to the ground when it’s ripe; we must work together as Nigeria’s custodians, united in truth and purpose, to secure our freedom. Let us awaken this sleeping giant and harness its potential for our benefit,” expressed the NLC in a heartfelt manner.
This development coincided with reports that the Federal Government is scheduled to engage in discussions with labor leaders today in Abuja to avert the planned strike set to commence on October 3.
In an independent anniversary message titled “Nigeria: ‘The Challenges of a Mismanaged Giant,'” NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, emphasized that the struggle beginning on October 3 is aimed at rekindling Nigeria’s status as a symbol of hope and prosperity for all its citizens.
Ajaero acknowledged that despite its flaws at inception, Nigeria possesses immense potential to rank among the world’s leading economies.
“As we celebrate this Independence Day, let us do so with a renewed sense of purpose. We must confront our current challenges while acknowledging our past, and collectively strive for a brighter future for Nigeria,” he asserted.
“Together, we can recapture the greatness that has eluded us for far too long. The time has come for Nigeria to once again stand as a symbol of hope and prosperity for all its citizens. Remember, our unity will lead to triumph. We call upon all Nigerians to join us on October 3 in various locations across Nigeria as we embark on our journey towards freedom through an indefinite nationwide strike.”
“To achieve this goal, the Nigeria Labour Congress calls upon all of us, regardless of our geographical origins, to unite and form a strong coalition that will pave the way for our nation to attain genuine independence. This call extends to all regions of our country, including the North, East, West, and South.”
