The West African Examinations Council is poised to introduce a Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode for its senior school examinations.

Mr. Patrick Areghan, the Head of National Office (HNO), made this announcement on Saturday, September 23, revealing that the implementation of CBT examinations had long been a part of his vision for the organization’s future.

Areghan stated, “We have already embarked on the journey toward CBT examinations. Our planning has advanced considerably, and even within the sub-region, the council’s registrar is also pursuing similar initiatives.

“However, the transition is not as straightforward as some might assume. We face significant challenges when it comes to conducting CBT for practical and essay papers. For objective questions, CBT is feasible, but it becomes complex when dealing with theory and practical components.

“We must also consider the digital literacy levels in schools. How many schools have access to computer resources, and how many can sustain them with consistent electricity supply? These factors cannot be overlooked.

“While some institutions have the infrastructure in place, we must address the practicality of implementing CBT for all subjects. Nonetheless, I am determined to see the council move in this direction.

“We should be prepared to introduce CBT examinations, starting with objective questions if necessary. However, it’s important to acknowledge that not all schools will be immediately equipped for this transition. Perhaps we can adopt a phased approach, allowing schools that cannot afford CBT to continue using the traditional pencil and paper mode.

“I envision WAEC embracing this evolution.”
