Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has expressed his appreciation for the judgment of the Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal, which has upheld his victory in the March 18th election. He commended the judiciary for delivering a unanimous verdict, demonstrating a unified and resolute stance on the matter.
The three-member panel, in its judgment delivered unanimously on Friday, held that the petitioner’s claim lacked merit.
Mutfwang, who appeared as a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today last Friday, characterized the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s petition challenging his electoral victory as both mischievous and a futile expenditure of time and energy. He emphasized that the court rightly labeled them as meddlesome interlopers.
He stated, “It’s worth recalling that previously, some of my state and National Assembly members were disqualified, ostensibly due to a lack of structure by the PDP.
“Panel 1 had already validated the election of the Senate minority leader and other National Assembly members because, from the outset, to anyone genuinely, fairly, and honestly assessing the situation, it’s clear that the APC’s petition, and any similar ones, are not only mischievous but also a sheer waste of time and energy, as they are well aware of the undeniable truth.”
“I want to emphasize that the cases are readily available for public scrutiny. The actions taken by the petitioners have been rightfully characterized by the tribunal as consistent with established precedent, labeling them as nothing more than intrusive individuals. I am pleased that today, the judiciary has delivered a resounding verdict.”
Addressing the judgment that led to the removal of some PDP lawmakers from their positions within the state due to organizational deficiencies within the party, Governor Mutfwang asserted that the judiciary would be held accountable as the case progresses through the appeals process.
He pointed out that the Supreme Court has previously set a precedent, stating that, in matters concerning pre-election issues and the nomination of candidates, one party cannot interfere in the internal affairs of another opposing party.
Governor Mutfwang expresses confidence that the panel’s decision to remove the PDP lawmakers will be overturned by higher courts, emphasizing that the petition represents an “abuse of the legal process and a departure from established precedent.”
