In a recent interview at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, former US President Donald Trump made a claim regarding the events of January 6, 2021. Trump argued that former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi bears responsibility for the Capitol riot on that day.
According to Trump, “Nancy Pelosi was in charge of security, and she turned down a request for 10,000 soldiers. Had she not declined this request, January 6th would not have occurred,” Trump stated during his conversation with NBC’s “Meet the Press” host Kristen Welker.
On January 6, 2021, following the 2020 presidential election defeat of President Trump, a mob of his supporters stormed the United States Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. Their goal was to prevent the joint session of Congress from formalizing President-elect Joe Biden’s Electoral College victory.
When asked if he had called the military or law enforcement on that day, Trump responded, “I believe I acted appropriately. Nancy Pelosi’s decision to turn down 10,000 soldiers…,” at which point Welker challenged him, emphasizing that Pelosi did not possess the authority he held as commander in chief.
In response, Trump pointed out, “The Capitol police testified against her, including their chief. They testified strongly against her, and they claim that all evidence was destroyed. She has authority over the Capitol, and when I requested National Guard presence three days in advance, she declined.”
Welker interjected, “She denies that an official request was ever made,” to which Trump responded, “The mayor of D.C. provided a letter confirming her refusal. We have it. Additionally, the police commissioner of the Capitol police stated he wanted it, but Nancy Pelosi refused. Therefore, she bears responsibility for January 6th.”
He went on to assert, “Nancy Pelosi is responsible, and the Jan. 6 Committee declined to interview her.”
In response to these claims, a representative for Pelosi issued a statement to Fox News Digital, saying, “As our office has stated previously, the former president’s allegations are entirely fabricated.” The spokesperson added, “Numerous independent fact-checkers have confirmed that Speaker Pelosi did not orchestrate her own attack.”
This revised text maintains the core information while providing a more neutral presentation of the claims and responses related to the events of January 6, 2021, and the role of Nancy Pelosi.
