Human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) has called upon the Federal Government to initiate legal proceedings against Godwin Emefiele, the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), as well as the leadership of the apex bank, in connection with the financial crisis that occurred in the country earlier this year.
In a statement issued on Sunday, he alleged that Emefiele and the CBN had provided false information to the Nigerian public regarding the availability of cash in response to the currency redesign initiative.
“By leading the Nigerian populace to believe that an ample supply of cash had been distributed to commercial banks to replace the N3.5 trillion withdrawn from customers, Mr. Godwin Emefiele and the entire CBN management should be held accountable and potentially face legal prosecution for incitement and potential harm,” he declared.
Falana additionally urges the CBN to take responsibility for rebuilding bank facilities damaged during the upheaval caused by the currency redesign policy. Furthermore, he calls on the central bank to provide compensation to the families of individuals who lost their lives as a result of public unrest prompted by these events.
“In addition, Falana emphasized the importance of the CBN undertaking the reconstruction of the bank buildings that were damaged and providing compensation to the families of those who tragically lost their lives due to the actions of agitated members of the public,” Falana stated.
