The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has expressed grave concern over the erosion of a vital intangible asset that bolsters a nation’s strength, namely, respect for the rule of law in Nigeria.

In a statement shared on his official social media account, in observance of International Democracy Day on September 15th, Obi remarked that “our beloved nation is increasingly drifting away from the core principles of authentic democracy.” He urged fellow Nigerians to unite and redouble their efforts in nurturing and deepening the foundations of our nation’s democracy.

The former governor of Anambra State called upon all Nigerians to remain steadfast in their commitment to fortifying and fortifying our nation’s democratic institutions.

“As is evident in our present-day reality, the relentless erosion of the fundamental ideals upon which Nigeria’s democracy was founded, unless halted, will inevitably propel the nation further into a state of lawlessness. The prevailing surge in pervasive corruption, constitutional violations, and the disregard for the rule of law, along with transactional politics permeating all branches of government, executive, legislative, and judicial, continues to clash with our nation’s democratic principles.

Consequently, our cherished nation is teetering dangerously close to the precipice of true democracy. Gradually, we are relinquishing one of our most invaluable intangible assets—respect for the rule of law.

I implore all Nigerians to remain steadfast in their resolve to construct and strengthen our nation’s democratic framework. I reiterate my unwavering commitment to ushering in a novel and genuinely democratic Nigeria. My dedication to this cause is solely driven by the desire to enhance our society.

My vision for a novel and genuinely democratic Nigeria is rooted in my profound belief that, with effective leadership, as I pledge to provide, Nigeria can become a haven for every Nigerian. We must not abandon our nation, for a new and truly democratic Nigeria is within reach.”
