On Tuesday, a group of University of Lagos students took to the streets to protest against the recent increase in tuition fees at the institution.

This marks the second consecutive protest within a week from UNILAG students, who have been joined by peers from various other universities.

The demonstrators took to the streets, passionately advocating for a significant reduction in school fees.

Accompanying the students were officers from the Nigerian Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

Several students interviewed by Channels Television expressed their determination to persist in their protests until their school fees are reverted to their previous levels.

They argued that the increase in tuition fees lacked compassion and empathy.

Furthermore, they called upon the Federal Government to allocate the funds generated from the subsidy removal to the improvement of education, rather than permitting any further rise in tuition fees.

In July, the authorities at UNILAG had announced an increase in tuition fees for both new and returning undergraduate students.

The institution had justified the decision based on what it referred to as the “current economic conditions.”
