The Rivers State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has apprehended ten individuals suspected of engaging in pipeline vandalism, crude oil theft, and illicit activities related to petroleum products.
The Command has also seized nine vehicles containing illegally refined petroleum products concealed in cellophane bags and confiscated 28,225 liters of illegally refined AGO, commonly referred to as diesel.
Among the ten suspects apprehended, Chinedu Michael stands out as a repeat offender. He had been granted bail just two months ago after being arrested for the illegal refining of petroleum products by the Corps.
During a press briefing held at the Command Headquarters in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State, State Commandant Basil Igwebueze highlighted that these suspects were captured at different locations across the state through the combined efforts of the Anti-vandal Unit and the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army.
Commandant Igwebueze further stated that the suspects will face legal charges, and both the illicit products and the seized vehicles will be forfeited, with the proceeds being remitted to the federal government.
He emphasized that the Command will continue to uphold its commitment to safeguarding critical national assets and infrastructure. He also urged for a comprehensive review of laws pertaining to crude oil theft to ensure they become more stringent and effective.
