Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday expressed his view that legal proceedings against former US President Donald Trump are characterized by what he believes to be “politically motivated prosecution.”
The Kremlin has consistently voiced its support for the former president, who is currently confronting a series of charges related to alleged interference in elections.
Regarding the legal actions against Trump, Putin stated during an economic forum in Vladivostok, located in the far eastern part of the country: “In the present context, the prosecution of Trump is seen positively by us as it highlights perceived flaws within the American system.”
He further characterized it as “a politically motivated attempt to undermine a political rival.”
Putin, a former member of the Soviet security services, remarked, “This illustrates the nature of our ongoing conflict… As was often said during the Soviet era, ‘the grim visage of American imperialism.'”
Relations between Washington and Moscow, already strained by a multitude of issues during Putin’s leadership, have reached even greater depths since the Kremlin initiated extensive hostilities in Ukraine last year.
Putin expressed his skepticism about any potential shift in the United States’ foreign policy stance towards Russia, regardless of the outcome of the upcoming presidential election.
He also accused Washington of fueling anti-Russian sentiments among everyday Americans.
“The current leadership has steered American society in a manner perceived as adversarial toward Russia,” stated the Kremlin leader.
“They have established this course, and reversing it now appears to be quite challenging.”
