On Monday, Niger reopened its airspace, ending a nearly month-long ban that was imposed in response to a military coup that took place in July. This development was confirmed by the official Nigerien news agency ANP.

After seizing control on July 26, the coup leaders promptly restricted the country’s airspace, only to subsequently reopen it on August 2. However, this decision was swiftly reversed on August 6 in response to threats from neighboring nations, who were prepared to intervene militarily to reinstate civilian governance.

According to a spokesperson from the transport ministry, “The airspace of the Republic of Niger is now accessible to both national and international commercial flights.” The statement also noted the resumption of ground services.

It’s important to note that Niger’s airspace will remain off-limits to all military operations and any flights necessitating prior authorization from the relevant authorities.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has instituted sanctions against Niger following the removal of President Mohamed Bazoum. Additionally, the bloc has issued a stern warning of potential military intervention as a last resort should diplomatic negotiations fail to reinstate civilian governance.

As of August 2, Niger has officially reopened its land and air borders with five neighboring nations: Algeria, Burkina Faso, Libya, Mali, and Chad. Certain flights that have obtained special authorization have also been permitted to utilize the airport located in the capital city, Niamey.

However, it is worth noting that the United Nations has raised concerns about a significant quantity of food aid earmarked for Niger, which remains stranded in transit due to ongoing border closures.
