The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has recently called for an increase in allowances from both state and federal governments, citing the escalating cost of living triggered by the Federal Government’s removal of fuel subsidies.

This resolution emerged from the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the NMA held in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, from August 27 to September 3.

Nevertheless, Uche Ojinmah, the National President of the NMA, praised the Federal Government during an interview with journalists on Sunday. He commended the government for the recent increase in the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) for its members. He emphasized that this agreement, which was signed on June 1, was finalized on May 25, preceding the removal of subsidies and the subsequent rise in inflation, along with its associated consequences.

Among its demands was a request for healthcare professionals to lay down their metaphorical swords, with an assurance that the NMA, under its current leadership, is committed to fostering a constructive consensus with the Federal Government to improve the healthcare sector.

The association also urged the Federal Government to establish emergency preparedness measures against flooding, aimed at safeguarding the lives of Nigerians. Additionally, they called for concerted efforts to minimize insecurity, thereby reducing the brain drain in the medical profession.

These demands also encompassed a plea for the NMA in Cross River State to continue advocating for the release of one of their colleagues, Professor Ekanem Ephraim, who was abducted over a month ago.

The NMA president, addressing the executive committee, lauded Nigerian doctors for their unwavering determination and resilience in the face of the myriad challenges currently confronting the medical profession.

He urged NMA members to persist in their efforts to promote peace and unity while also offering prayers for improved working conditions.

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State graced the occasion as the distinguished guest of honor.

In appreciation of the NMA’s decision to hold their meeting in the state, the governor provided an overview of his accomplishments in the healthcare sector and outlined his future plans.
