President Bola Tinubu has voiced profound apprehension regarding the political situation in Gabon and the overall socio-political stability within the nation.
Tinubu’s response emerged hours subsequent to a group of Gabonese military officers making an appearance on television on Wednesday. In their appearance, they declared the termination of the present regime and the nullification of an election that, as per official records, had been won by President Ali Bongo Ondimba.
Ajuri Ngelale, the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, communicated Tinubu’s conviction that upholding the rule of law and a steadfast commitment to constitutionally resolving electoral disputes is imperative for Africa’s progress. Speaking to State House correspondents, Ngelale conveyed Tinubu’s sentiments:
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is closely monitoring the unfolding events in Gabon with profound concern regarding the nation’s socio-political stability. He is alarmed by the apparent proliferation of autocratic tendencies that seem to be spreading across various regions of our cherished continent.”
“In light of the substantial personal sacrifices that President Tinubu himself has made in his unwavering dedication to the advancement and safeguarding of democracy, he firmly maintains that authority should rest within the hands of Africa’s remarkable populace, rather than being wielded through the threat of force.”
Ngelale emphasized that Tinubu firmly affirmed that “the preservation of the rule of law and unwavering adherence to constitutional mechanisms for resolving electoral disputes must remain a constant principle on our esteemed continent.”
He further highlighted that the President is actively engaged in close communication with fellow heads of state within the African Union. This collaboration aims to establish a comprehensive consensus regarding the subsequent measures to address the unfolding situation in Gabon. This effort also extends to devising a united continental strategy to counteract the concerning proliferation of autocratic regimes that is currently casting its shadow over our lands.
