A Russian missile strike targeted Chernihiv, a northern city in Ukraine, resulting in the tragic loss of seven lives and causing injuries to over 100 individuals on Saturday. This incident occurred shortly after President Vladimir Putin’s meeting with Moscow’s senior army commanders. The United Nations condemned the attack as “heinous.”
It is truly heinous to target the central square of a bustling city in the early morning, when pedestrians are strolling about and some are on their way to church to observe a significant religious occasion for numerous Ukrainians,” expressed Denise Brown, Ukraine’s humanitarian coordinator at the United Nations.
Brown’s remarks pertained to the Orthodox festivity of the Transfiguration of the Lord, during which certain individuals in Chernihiv participated in morning church services.
“I unequivocally denounce the recurring pattern of Russian assaults on populated regions within Ukraine… Acts of aggression aimed at civilians or civilian structures are explicitly prohibited under the principles of international humanitarian law,” she further emphasized.
