Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is urging President Bola Tinubu to reconsider the idea of engaging in any conflict with the Republic of Niger in the aftermath of the recent coup in the latter country. Instead of resorting to military action, the PDP calls for a diplomatic approach to address the situation in Niger and foster regional stability. It is essential to prioritize dialogue and cooperation among nations in the region to find peaceful resolutions to the challenges faced by our neighboring countries. The PDP stands firm in its belief that peaceful negotiations and international diplomacy are the most effective ways to handle such complex situations and ensure the welfare and security of our citizens and the entire West African region.

The Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, expressed his views after a meeting of PDP chieftains in Abuja.

“The meeting advised the President, Commander in Chief, and the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to refrain from engaging in any form of war with the Republic of Niger over the recent military coup in the country. Instead, we strongly advocate the utilization of dialogue and diplomacy as the primary means to address the situation,” he stated on Saturday.

The PDP chieftain suggested that President Tinubu should take measures to cut the cost of governance by reducing the number of ministerial appointees.

“The meeting advised the Federal Government to demonstrate leadership in curbing the cost of governance,” he emphasized. “Having forty-seven ministers, along with numerous special advisers and assistants, should be reduced to ensure the health of our economy by cutting down expenses.”

He also acknowledged the positive outcomes of the healing and reconciliation process within the party.

“The governor emphasized that no individual or group will be permitted to undermine the unity of the party and its processes,” he asserted.

The closed-door meeting saw the presence of prominent figures from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), including Atiku Abubakar, the party’s presidential candidate in the last election, and his running mate, Ifeanyi Okowa. Various PDP chieftains were also in attendance.
