Former lawmaker Shehu Sani has strongly urged the Senate to carefully consider and assess President Bola Tinubu’s request for military action against the Republic of Niger. Taking to his X social media platform on Friday, Sani emphasized the importance of not allowing ourselves to be influenced or misled by foreign powers.
Recall that the President sent a letter to the Senate, seeking approval for military action and additional sanctions against the military junta in Niger. Sani’s plea to Tinubu and the Senate comes as a call for thorough deliberation and cautious decision-making regarding such a significant matter of national and international importance.
However, Sani believes that senators should carefully consider the implications and consequences of their decisions, particularly those representing states that share borders with Niger.
He expressed, “The Nigerian Senate should refrain from approving any military action against Niger Republic. Engaging in war and getting stuck in the Sahel conflict is not in the best interest of our country.”
“President Tinubu must avoid being misled by foreign powers. The examples of Saudi in Yemen, America in Afghanistan, and Russia in Ukraine should serve as a lesson that wars rarely conclude quickly.”
“Senators, especially those representing states along the Niger border, should thoroughly evaluate the potential ramifications of their choices. The idea of weaponizing electricity supplies to Niger is also highly condemnable.”
“President Tinubu should continue exploring diplomatic channels and work to safeguard the lives of those who might be put at risk. That’s my perspective.”
