Brad Pitt has asked a court to require his former wife, Angelina Jolie, to provide additional financial records as their long-running legal dispute over the French winery Château Miraval continues.
According to court documents filed on July 31, Pitt’s legal team argues that Jolie has not turned over all of the financial information they requested. While she reportedly submitted tax returns and profit participation records for 2020 and 2021, Pitt’s attorneys claim she has declined to provide similar documents covering the years 2017 through 2019.
Why Pitt Wants the Records
Pitt’s attorneys say the missing financial documents are relevant because of claims Jolie made in her countersuit. They argue that Jolie has alleged she put her career on hold after the couple separated in 2016, gave up years of income, and ultimately decided to sell her stake in Château Miraval in 2019 to achieve financial independence from Pitt.
The filing states that the requested records would allow Pitt’s legal team to evaluate those claims by reviewing her earnings during that period, including both employment income and profit-sharing payments from previous acting and directing projects.
According to the filing, Pitt’s attorneys previously proposed that Jolie agree she was not under financial pressure before 2020 and that Pitt did not use economic coercion against her between 2017 and 2019. They say Jolie declined those proposals and indicated she may argue at trial that Pitt used the winery as leverage over her.
Jolie Disputes Pitt’s Interpretation
Jolie’s legal team has pushed back against Pitt’s request, arguing that he has taken her statements out of context.
In an earlier court filing, her attorneys said Jolie never claimed she was experiencing general financial hardship. Instead, they argue she was referring specifically to her desire to become financially independent from her former husband following their separation.
Her lawyers also dispute Pitt’s characterization that she felt “financially cornered,” saying those words were Pitt’s description—not Jolie’s.
According to Jolie’s filing, the issue was not a lack of money but her effort to separate her finances from Pitt while their divorce and business disputes continued.
Privacy Concerns
Jolie’s attorneys also contend that extending the financial disclosure request back to 2017 would unnecessarily invade her privacy.
They note that she has already provided tax returns and profit participation statements for 2020 and 2021, despite believing she was not legally required to do so. In their view, those records already provide sufficient information related to the issues at the center of the case, making earlier financial records unnecessary.
The Long-Running Legal Battle
Pitt and Jolie ended their relationship in 2016, and their divorce was finalized in December 2024. However, their legal battle over Château Miraval has continued, with both sides disputing the circumstances surrounding Jolie’s sale of her ownership interest in the winery and the financial issues connected to that transaction.
The latest filing marks another chapter in one of Hollywood’s longest-running legal disputes, with the court expected to decide whether Jolie must produce the additional financial records sought by Pitt’s legal team.
