A Deputy Superintendent of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Maiwada Abubakar Santali, has died after he was reportedly attacked by suspected motorcycle thieves in the Karshi area of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Federal Capital Territory.
Santali was serving with the Department of Urban and Regional Development under the Federal Capital Development Administration (FCDA).
According to a family member, Sani Musa, the officer returned home from work on Monday and spent some time with his family before heading out in the evening to meet friends at a popular gathering spot known locally as Majalisa, located near Government Secondary School (GSS), Karshi.
Musa said Santali was the first person to arrive at the meeting point when he was allegedly ambushed by suspected motorcycle snatchers. The attackers reportedly struck him several times on the head before escaping with his motorcycle.
“He was the first to get there. We later learned that the attackers repeatedly hit him on the head before making away with the motorcycle he arrived with,” Musa said.
He explained that commercial motorcyclists who were nearby washing their bikes at a stream heard Santali’s cries and rushed to help.
According to Musa, they found the injured officer struggling toward them before he collapsed. He was immediately taken to the General Hospital in Karshi. Due to the seriousness of his condition, he was later transferred to the National Hospital, Abuja, where he passed away the following day.
Santali was laid to rest on Tuesday in accordance with Islamic burial rites.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the incident, and there has been no confirmation of any arrests in connection with the attack.
