French electronic music producer Vincent Belorgey, known around the world by his stage name DJ Kavinsky, has died at the age of 50. He reportedly passed away at his home in Paris.
Kavinsky became an international sensation with his iconic track Nightcall, which gained worldwide recognition after serving as the opening theme for the 2011 film Drive, starring Ryan Gosling. The song remains one of the defining electronic tracks of the last two decades.
More recently, the artist performed Nightcall during the closing ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games alongside Belgian singer Angèle, introducing the classic track to a new global audience.
According to the Paris prosecutor’s office, an investigation has been launched to establish the exact circumstances surrounding his death. Authorities said emergency responders found no signs of suspicious activity at the scene.
After building a loyal following through a string of successful EPs in the 2000s, Kavinsky released his long-awaited debut album, OutRun, in 2013. The record was met with widespread acclaim and cemented his place as one of the leading names in synthwave and electronic music.
In a 2022 interview with Mixmag, Belorgey reflected on the immense expectations that followed the album’s success, admitting he felt considerable pressure after its release. The popularity of Nightcall ultimately led him to step away from music for nearly a decade before returning with his second studio album, Reborn.
Despite his fame, Belorgey kept his personal life largely out of the spotlight. The persona of “Kavinsky” was a fictional character he created, preferring the mystique of storytelling over celebrity.
Speaking in 2007, he explained that the character allowed him to separate himself from his public image, saying he had little interest in putting his own face at the center of his work. Instead, his focus was always on creating music and building a unique artistic world.
Kavinsky’s influence on electronic music, film soundtracks, and synthwave culture will continue to inspire artists and fans for years to come.
