The Lagos State Government has announced a temporary traffic diversion along the Kara Bridge section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway as rehabilitation work on the bridge’s expansion joint gets underway.
In a statement issued by the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, the repair project will be handled by the Federal Ministry of Works and is scheduled to commence on Tuesday, July 28, 2026. The maintenance exercise is expected to last for approximately two weeks.
To allow engineers to carry out the repairs safely, the current four-lane carriageway will be reduced to two lanes across a 1.5-kilometre stretch of the bridge. Authorities say the temporary lane closure is necessary to create a secure work zone throughout the project.
The ministry warned that motorists should expect moderate traffic congestion around the Fatgbems Turn, as some drivers may make U-turns or seek alternative routes to avoid delays.
Despite the partial closure, officials assured commuters travelling towards Ibadan beyond the Fatgbems Turn that traffic is expected to flow with minimal disruption during the rehabilitation period.
Road users are encouraged to plan their journeys in advance, explore alternative routes where possible, comply with traffic regulations, and cooperate with traffic management officers stationed along the corridor to help maintain a smooth flow of vehicles.
The government also appealed for patience and understanding from the public, emphasizing that the repair work is intended to enhance the structural integrity, durability, and overall safety of the Kara Bridge for all motorists.
