A message from FIFA president Gianni Infantino congratulating Argentina on its 2026 World Cup performance has attracted attention after emerging during an ongoing investigation into the team’s post-final conduct.
The letter, reportedly sent to Argentine Football Association (AFA) president Claudio Tapia, came shortly after FIFA confirmed it was reviewing the heated scenes that followed Argentina’s 1-0 defeat to Spain in the World Cup final at the New York New Jersey Stadium.
The post-match incident saw several members of the Argentine camp involved in confrontations with Spanish players. Among those reportedly involved were Leandro Paredes, Nahuel Molina and assistant coach Roberto Ayala, who were seen in tense exchanges after the final whistle.
Following the altercation, FIFA announced that it had launched a disciplinary investigation into possible “offensive behaviour and violations of the principles of fair play.” The governing body has yet to reveal any punishments or further decisions related to the incident.
Despite the investigation, Infantino’s congratulatory letter highlighted Argentina’s overall contribution to the tournament and praised their efforts throughout the competition.
Addressing Tapia, Infantino congratulated Argentina for securing the World Cup silver medal after what he described as an exciting final against Spain. He also praised the team’s role in helping make the tournament a memorable global football event.
“The magnificent performance of the Albiceleste also contributed decisively to making this edition an exceptional event that captivated millions of football enthusiasts around the world,” Infantino wrote.
The FIFA president also extended his recognition to Argentina’s players, head coach Lionel Scaloni, the coaching and medical teams, and the supporters who followed the national team throughout the tournament.
However, the timing of the message has raised eyebrows among football observers, as it arrived while FIFA’s disciplinary process remains active. The situation has created debate over whether the congratulatory note should have been issued before the investigation into the final’s controversial aftermath was concluded.
For now, FIFA’s review continues, with any possible sanctions against members of the Argentine delegation still pending.
