Police rescue abandoned newborn in Yobe

The Yobe State Police Command has rescued an abandoned newborn baby girl in Kallalawa village, Damaturu.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday, May 25, 2026.

According to him, the baby, estimated to be just a day old, was immediately taken to the hospital, where doctors confirmed she was in stable condition.

“On May 25, 2026, at about 3:00 p.m., operatives attached to A Division, Damaturu, rescued a newborn baby girl estimated to be one day old after she was discovered abandoned in Kallalawa village,” the statement read.

“The infant was promptly taken to the Special Baby Care Unit of the General Hospital, Damaturu, where medical examination confirmed that she was in stable condition.

“The child was thereafter handed over to the Social Welfare Department for proper care and protection, while investigations have commenced to trace the mother and determine the circumstances surrounding the abandonment.”
