The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Moshood Jimoh, has issued a stern warning to members of the state task force, stating that the unit risks being disbanded if found guilty of human rights violations.

Jimoh made the remarks on Saturday while speaking to journalists at the command headquarters in Ikeja, in response to a viral video showing the arrest of a traffic offender. The incident sparked online debate, with some residents alleging excessive force by task force officials.

The police chief, however, maintained that there was no evidence of abuse in the incident. He emphasized that the suspect, who was arrested for driving against traffic, was treated according to legal procedures and due process. The individual was promptly brought before a mobile court, where charges were read and bail was granted. The suspect was later remanded after failing to meet bail conditions.

Jimoh explained that the task force is legally empowered to enforce environmental and sanitation laws across Lagos State, noting that their activities are essential to maintaining order in a densely populated city. He added that task force personnel have undergone retraining sessions focused on human rights and professional conduct.

“I will not hesitate to dissolve the task force and bring in new personnel if there is clear evidence of human rights violations, as no officer is indispensable,” he said.

Acknowledging the role of social and traditional media in highlighting such incidents, Jimoh urged citizens to report any misconduct to the police while cautioning against spreading misinformation that could undermine public trust.

He stressed that policing in Lagos requires a careful balance between enforcing the law and respecting citizens’ dignity. “Lagos has a population estimated between 20 and 25 million people, making strict adherence to laws essential to prevent disorder and chaos,” he said.
