Some members of the House of Representatives staged a walkout from the Green Chamber in protest against a move to rescind the passage of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.

Tempers flared after the Chairman of the House Committee on Rules and Business moved a motion asking the House to reverse its decision on the bill, which was passed on December 23, 2025. The Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, put the motion to a voice vote. Although the “nays” were louder than the “ayes,” he ruled that the ayes had it — a decision that triggered protests among lawmakers.

Abbas subsequently called for an executive session, but it failed to calm tensions as the chamber descended into another rowdy sitting.

Lawmakers continued protesting over Clause 60(3), which deals with the compulsory electronic transmission of election results.

They stood up and prevented the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, from continuing proceedings.

Eventually, aggrieved members walked out of the plenary. As they exited, opposition lawmakers were heard chanting “APC Ole,” meaning “APC thieves.”
