Honourable Alabi Bliss Oshionogue, Chairman of Akoko-Edo Local Government Area in Edo State, has been impeached by members of the council’s legislative arm.

The impeachment was carried out through a letter signed by seven councillors, just hours after lawmakers of the Edo State House of Assembly failed to broker peace between the chairman and the aggrieved councillors.

According to reports, the removal followed an alleged attempt by three councillors—who were absent from the reconciliation meeting—to remove the seven councillors from office. Sources disclosed that the seats of the three councillors were subsequently declared vacant.

Following the development, the seven councillors reportedly proceeded to Igarra, the headquarters of Akoko-Edo Local Government Area, where they issued the impeachment letter, according to The Nation.

In the impeachment notice, the councillors announced the immediate removal of Oshionogue from office, effective January 28, 2026.

The letter read in part:
“We, the undersigned members of the Akoko-Edo Local Government Area Legislative Arm, hereby impeach you as the Acting Local Government Council Chairman with effect from today, the 28th of January, 2026.

“This decision is based on allegations of abuse of office, high-handedness, embezzlement of council funds, anti-party activities, financial recklessness, forgery, and persistent disobedience to constituted authorities.”
