A staff member of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), identified as Aliye Saka and popularly known as Baba Niye, has died after collapsing in a toilet within the hospital premises.

The deceased, who was reportedly an ambulance driver attached to the hospital’s ambulance bay, was said to have passed away on Monday, January 26, while using the facility. The incident was first reported by Nigerian Tribune.

A food vendor at the hospital, identified as Mama Bola, expressed shock over the incident, noting that the deceased did not show any visible signs of illness prior to his death.

According to her account, Baba Niye had excused himself to use the toilet but did not return for several hours. Concern was raised when another individual attempted to use the facility and received no response after repeated knocks.

She explained that about an hour later, the individual forced the door open and discovered Baba Niye seated and unresponsive. Mama Bola added that she had seen him earlier that morning and he appeared healthy, making the incident particularly shocking.

A medical doctor at the facility, Dr. Babalola, confirmed the incident.

The Chairman of the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) at LASUTH, Comrade Odedeyi Adekunle, also confirmed the death but declined to provide further details, stating that he was only authorised to comment on union-related matters.
