Nigerians have resurfaced an old video of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, criticising the practice of sending children abroad to study law and other courses he believes are well covered by Nigerian universities.

The video has re-emerged just days after Wike’s son reportedly earned a Master’s degree in Law from King’s College London.

In the clip, the former Rivers State governor questioned the rationale behind studying certain disciplines overseas, arguing that Nigeria already has strong academic institutions offering such programmes.

“Some of these courses, you don’t need to send people abroad to study them. What we have said in our own case is this: why do you have to send somebody who wants to read English abroad? Why do I want to send somebody who wants to study Economics overseas? Why do I want to send somebody who wants to read Law overseas, when we have very good faculties in these areas in Nigerian universities?” Wike said.
