Peter Obi has mourned the Omatu brothers who lost their lives after a fire engulfed their place of business at the Great Nigeria Insurance House in Lagos.
The former presidential candidate attended the brothers’ funeral on January 14 in Ihiala, Anambra State.
Following the burial, Obi took to social media to express his grief over the tragic incident.
He wrote that he attended the “deeply emotional and heartbreaking burial” of three siblings — Stephen Onyeka Omatu, Casmir Nnabuike Omatu, and Collins Kenechukwu Omatu — whose lives were cut short by the fire outbreak.
Obi described the incident as a devastating tragedy, noting that the brothers had sent distress calls for help while trapped in the building but were unable to receive any emergency assistance. He lamented that several days passed before their bodies were eventually recovered from the rubble, calling it a painful example of systemic failure.
According to him, the loss goes beyond the family, describing it as a national tragedy that highlights the urgent need to improve Nigeria’s emergency response services.
“This is not just a personal loss for their family; it is a national loss,” Obi said, stressing that no Nigerian should be left to perish due to the absence of timely rescue services.
He prayed for the repose of the brothers’ souls and asked God to grant their family the strength and comfort to endure the grief, while urging that lessons be learned to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
