Tottenham Hotspur forward Brennan Johnson has completed a £35 million move to Crystal Palace, signing a four-and-a-half-year contract at Selhurst Park and becoming the club’s record signing.
The 24-year-old Wales international, who fell out of favour at Spurs under head coach Thomas Frank despite finishing as the club’s top scorer last season, is set to make his Palace debut in Sunday’s Premier League clash against Newcastle at St James’ Park.
“I’m really excited and really happy,” Johnson said. “Crystal Palace are such a great club, one that I’ve always admired. It’s a great time for me to be here and to be part of the journey this club is on.”
Palace manager Oliver Glasner believes Johnson will strengthen his team’s attacking options. “Brennan will give us options in our attacking play with his pace and goalscoring ability,” Glasner said.
Johnson scored 18 goals last season and famously netted the winner in the Europa League final against Manchester United, helping Tottenham end a 17-year wait for major silverware. However, he has mostly been used as a backup to Mohammed Kudus since Thomas Frank replaced Ange Postecoglou as Spurs manager.
The signing is a major boost for Glasner, whose squad has been described as being in “survival mode” after a 1–1 draw with Fulham.
FA Cup holders Crystal Palace, currently 10th in the Premier League, travel to Newcastle aiming to end a six-match winless streak in all competitions.
