British-Nigerian boxer Anthony Joshua has been discharged from the hospital two days after being involved in a tragic car accident in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two of his friends, Lateef Ayodele and Cina Gami.

In a joint statement on Wednesday, Gbenga Omotoso, Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, and Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy for Ogun State, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased.

“The governments of Lagos and Ogun states commiserate with the families of Lateef Ayodele and Cina Gami, who tragically lost their lives in the road accident involving Anthony Joshua,” the statement read. “We pray that The Almighty grants the repose of their souls and gives their families the strength to bear this very painful loss.”

The statement confirmed that Joshua was discharged from the hospital on Tuesday afternoon. Described as “heavy-hearted and full of emotions over the loss of his two close friends,” he was deemed clinically fit to continue recovery at home.

Joshua and his mother reportedly visited a funeral home in Lagos on the same day to pay their final respects. The two friends were being prepared for repatriation later in the evening.

The statement also praised the medical team at Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, for their care and professionalism:

“The doctors and medical personnel who attended to Anthony and others injured displayed exceptional care and professionalism, which is truly commendable.”
