A former mathematics teacher has been permanently barred from teaching after being sentenced to six and a half years in prison for engaging in inappropriate relationships with two of her students—one of whom she later had a child with while on bail. Rebecca Joynes, 30, was convicted of multiple counts of engaging in sexual activity with minors while in a position of trust. A misconduct panel has now ruled that her behavior constituted unacceptable professional conduct, which severely tarnished the reputation of the teaching profession.

Joynes first targeted a 15-year-old pupil in her class in 2021. She provided him part of her phone number and encouraged him to guess the rest, leading to flirtatious text exchanges. Their relationship developed after he turned 16, with Joynes sending intimate photos and affectionately describing him as “perfect.” She invited him to her flat, where they engaged in a sexual relationship on over 30 occasions at various locations. Joynes misled him into believing her chances of becoming pregnant were slim due to polycystic ovary syndrome but later surprised
