Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza, saying the world has “abandoned” Palestinians.
Speaking on Spanish radio station RAC1 on Monday, the 54-year-old criticised global leaders and expressed solidarity with civilians caught in the conflict.
Guardiola said he could not understand how anyone could defend the suffering in Gaza, noting that children, parents and grandparents “are not to blame for being born in Palestine.” He added that the world has “allowed the destruction of an entire people” and questioned how the situation could be described as anything other than a genocide.
He argued that leaders around the world — including Benjamin Netanyahu, Donald Trump, Volodymyr Zelensky, and Vladimir Putin — have failed to act meaningfully despite the horrific images emerging from the region. “Our children could be there,” he said, adding that he has “little faith” in current global leadership.
Guardiola stated that he sides with “the innocent people who are murdered daily,” saying one side holds overwhelming military power while the other does not. He called for a ceasefire and meaningful gestures that could lead to a resolution.
The manager spoke ahead of Tuesday’s ACT x Palestine charity friendly between Catalonia and Palestine at the Lluis Companys Stadium in Barcelona. More than 25,000 tickets have been sold, with all proceeds directed toward humanitarian aid and reconstruction in Gaza.
According to the Gaza Health Ministry, around 70,000 Palestinians have been killed since the October 7, 2023 attacks.
Guardiola described the match as “more than just symbolic,” adding that Palestinians “will see that there’s a part of the world that cares about them.”
