The Chinese government has issued a strong warning against any external interference in Nigeria’s domestic matters, following recent remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump suggesting possible military action over alleged persecution of Christians in the country.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, November 4, Mao Ning, spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reaffirmed Beijing’s support for the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, emphasizing China’s respect for Nigeria’s chosen development path.
“China firmly supports the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as it leads its people on a development path suited to its national conditions,” Mao said.
Describing Nigeria as a “comprehensive strategic partner,” Mao noted that Beijing stands firmly with the West African nation amid rising international tensions.
“China strongly opposes any country using religion or human rights as a pretext to interfere in another country’s internal affairs, or to threaten others with sanctions or military force,” she added.
China’s statement follows President Trump’s recent decision to redesignate Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern”, citing what he referred to as a “Christian genocide” occurring in the country.
