Popular Nigerian cleric, Bishop David Abioye, has criticised Nigerians — including some government officials — who publicly deny claims that Christians are being targeted in what many describe as a genocide.

Recently, U.S. Senator Ted Cruz alleged that there is an ongoing genocide against Christians in Nigeria, claiming that the acts are being backed by the Federal Government. The Nigerian government, however, refuted the accusation, insisting that there is no Christian genocide in the country and that both Muslims and Christians have been victims of various violent attacks. Some Christian leaders have also publicly dismissed the genocide claims.

Speaking during a church service, Bishop Abioye condemned those downplaying the situation, describing them as a “wicked set of people.”

“There is a lot of distortion going on — people claiming there is no genocide of Christians in this nation. Information backed with facts can never be thwarted. You see people buried in hundreds and still say there is no genocide. What a wicked set of people.

Agreed, others are also being killed for different reasons, but this one is very clear. Gradually, it is spreading to the South — the South-West and South-East — yet many so-called leaders, for their personal interests, claim it isn’t true. They are selling out their faith, if they have it at all.”
