Police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli said in a statement on Thursday, September 18, that the suspect, identified as Rose Mnisi, works as a cleaner at a local hospital. She was apprehended after police received information that a woman was attempting to sell placentas — an organ formed during pregnancy that connects the mother and baby.
“Police officers followed up on the tip-off and, based on the suspect’s description, located a woman carrying a plastic bag along Voortrekker Street in Lydenburg. Upon being approached, the woman was found with human tissue in her possession and confirmed that she works in the maternity ward as a cleaner,” Mdhluli said.
Mnisi was arrested and charged with the illegal possession of human tissue. She has since appeared before the Mashishing District Court, and the case was adjourned to September 25 for her bail application.
