The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 23-year-old woman, Nmesoma Josephine Nwoye, for allegedly faking her own kidnapping to extort ransom money from her parents — with the help of her boyfriend.

According to police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga, Nmesoma conspired with her 24-year-old boyfriend, Chibuike Ogbu, to stage the abduction. After demanding a ransom of ₦15 million, her parents eventually negotiated and paid ₦3 million, which was transferred directly into her personal account.

During an intelligence-led operation, officers from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Awkuzu, in Oyi Local Government Area, tracked and arrested the duo. The police recovered ₦1.2 million from the boyfriend, believed to be part of the ransom.

The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, expressed deep concern over the incident. He described it as a troubling sign of the increasing moral decline among youths, driven by greed and disregard for consequences.

CP Orutugu called on parents, guardians, and religious leaders to reinforce the values of honesty, discipline, and integrity among the younger generation. He also issued a stern warning to young people, emphasizing that no matter how well-hidden criminal acts may seem, the law will always catch up with offenders.
