Popular social commentator Solomon Buchi recently expressed his happiness about media personality Toke Makinwa expecting her first child. However, he also voiced discomfort with how she has intertwined her pregnancy announcement with references to Jesus and God.

Buchi emphasized that being a committed Christian—or “Jesus girl,” as he puts it—means following God’s teachings closely. He pointed out that, according to scripture, the ideal path to parenthood is through marriage. He believes that intentionally planning to have a child outside of wedlock, then framing it as a spiritual decision, conflicts with his understanding of biblical principles.

In a candid video shared on Instagram, Buchi said:

“I’m happy that Toke is having a child at almost 40. It seems like something she has deeply desired as a woman. But I have a problem with mixing Jesus and God with it. I was watching a clip from her podcast where she talked about making an agreement with God or praying to Him about wanting to become a mother.

As a Jesus girl, or Christian, we need to be very careful about how we mix God with our personal decisions—whether those decisions are godly or not.

Now, I’m not saying there is anything wrong with having a child. But if you’re having a child outside of wedlock, and you’re not married, there’s no need to bring God into that or spiritualize it. You can share your testimony without invoking God’s word and His standards.

Just say you wanted to be a mother, and now you’re about to be or already are one. There’s no need to infuse God into it, because according to God’s standard, the only right way to become a parent is within marriage. Of course, some people have made mistakes, and that’s okay—it doesn’t define their lives. But to sound as if you intentionally planned to have a child outside marriage and then try to spiritualize it and bring God into that—I’m happy for it, but let’s not bring God into it.”

Reactions to Buchi’s comments have been mixed. Some of his followers agree with his viewpoint, while others argue that only God has the authority to judge Toke’s personal choices.
