The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has unveiled a record-breaking $10.4 million prize pool for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), marking a significant boost in rewards for participating teams.

For the first time in the tournament’s history, the champions will receive $3.5 million—a 75% increase from the $2 million awarded in the previous edition. The runner-up will take home $1.2 million, while the third- and fourth-place teams will earn $700,000 and $600,000, respectively.

Each of the four losing quarter-finalists will receive $450,000. Teams finishing third or fourth in their respective groups will be awarded $300,000 or $200,000, depending on the group format. Bottom-placed teams in five-team groups will also receive $200,000 each.

The prize distribution, which covers all 19 participating teams, is aimed at incentivizing performance at all stages of the tournament.

CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe said the increase reflects the organization’s commitment to growing the game across the continent.

“This increase in prize money will support the development of locally based players and help strengthen the global competitiveness of African football,” Motsepe said in a statement. He added that CHAN remains “a key part of our strategy to make African football more appealing to fans, sponsors, and global broadcasters.”

The 2024 edition—officially titled CAF African Nations Championship Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda 2024—will be the first to be co-hosted by three countries. Scheduled to run from August 2 to 30, 2025, the tournament will feature 19 teams, including defending champions Senegal, record winners Morocco and DR Congo, as well as Nigeria, Algeria, Guinea, and Zambia.
