Security operatives on Monday took full control of the National Secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), blocking members of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) from holding their scheduled meeting.
According to reports, a faction of the party—reportedly backed by PDP governors—insisted on going ahead with the BoT meeting at the Wadata Plaza headquarters in Abuja. However, upon arrival, they were denied access by armed security personnel stationed at the premises.
Eyewitnesses and party loyalists alleged that the operatives were instructed to prevent any form of meeting from taking place at the secretariat. In a post on its official Facebook page, the PDP claimed that the police action was influenced by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing the party of meddling in its internal affairs.
Security officers reportedly entered the NEC hall—where the meeting was to be held—and ordered everyone present to vacate the premises.
This development marks another episode in the deepening internal crisis within the PDP, which has been grappling with leadership struggles and factional disagreements since the contentious presidential primaries ahead of the 2023 general elections.
At the heart of the latest turmoil is the battle over who holds the position of National Secretary. The divide has pitted Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum, against the Deputy National Chairman (South), Taofeek Arapaja, with each reportedly leading opposing factions within the National Working Committee (NWC).
As the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting approaches, tensions remain high, and calls for reconciliation continue to grow among stakeholders and supporters.
