The Anambra State Government has issued a directive mandating residents and occupants of dilapidated or visibly deteriorated buildings to repaint their structures as part of a broader environmental beautification campaign.

In a press statement released on Thursday, June 19, the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Felix Odimegwu, said buildings with washed-out paint deface the state’s environment and diminish its aesthetic appeal. He noted that the repainting exercise will focus particularly on buildings in Onitsha, Awka, Nkpor, Nnewi, and Ekwulobia, with immediate effect.

According to Odimegwu, enforcement operations will commence on July 1, 2025, as regulators begin field inspections to ensure compliance.

“This initiative aims to strengthen existing building structures, enhance the state’s aesthetic appeal, and promote green spaces, in line with the Anambra State Environmental Management, Protection and Administration Law 2024, Part 4, Section 79 (1–7),” he said.

A portion of the official statement reads:

“Notice is hereby given to all residents and occupants of buildings in public view, especially in Onitsha, Awka, Nkpor, Nnewi, and Ekwulobia, that general household inspection on dilapidated and unpainted structures defacing the environment shall commence immediately.”

The Commissioner emphasized that the law provides a legal framework for environmental beautification and called on both individuals and corporate organizations to comply. He specifically urged repainting of buildings that have not been maintained in the last 10 years or are currently in visibly poor condition.

“A clean, beautiful, and eco-friendly Anambra is possible if we join hands to improve her aesthetic ambience,” he added.
