A family of three has tragically lost their lives following a gas explosion at their residence in Warri, Delta State.

The incident occurred on May 30, 2025, as the family prepared for their daughter’s birthday celebration and an impending relocation abroad. According to engineer John Perede Akpoyibo, who reported the details on Saturday, June 14, the explosion happened while the father was installing a burner on a small gas cylinder, even as another cooker nearby was already in use.

Leaking gas from the smaller cylinder reportedly ignited a flame from the active cooker, sparking a powerful explosion.

The father died shortly after the blast. The mother, who had just stepped out of the bathroom, sustained critical burns and was rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), where she later died. Their daughter, who had recently secured a visa and was set to travel abroad, also suffered severe burns and died on June 14, 2025, at the same hospital.

Akpoyibo attributed the tragedy to the use of multiple gas cylinders in a confined space and the lack of basic safety measures such as gas leak detectors and fire extinguishers.

He urged households to avoid using more than one gas cylinder in enclosed areas, ensure proper ventilation, and extinguish all open flames before handling gas equipment. He also called for greater community awareness and education on gas safety to prevent similar incidents in the future.
